And...here's my best shot...

Remember the basketball pictures I mentioned? Here's the one I'm most proud of...I think it's just PERFECT! :-) I'm in love with it! Haha!

Oh, and I've officially joined the picture of the day challenge. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this, it is exactly as it sounds. I've committed to taking atleast one picture every day for the entire year. We'll see how it goes. Anyone who knows me knows that I'll probably miss a day here or there, but so far so good!

This looks fantastic Amy, great job! Do you have any tips? I'm thinking I may go shoot one of the games at C's school this week just for fun, but I have no idea how fast my SS actually needs to be. General tips would be very much appreciated too :)

Love all the photos of Emma too, but especially the 3rd one. Gorgeous!

Oh, I should have mentioned my settings on this shot. Sorry about that!

I shot with my 85mm f/1.8. My settings were pretty much the same the entire game. Once I figured out what worked, I didn't need to change anything.

Anyway, settings were:
ISO 1600
f/2.0 (though I'd had it at 1.8, but must have bumped it accidentally)
SS 400 (I could go down to about 320 without motion blur, though)

Also, I was back button focusing with AI Servo, so I could just track the subject. Focus was MUCH easier that way. Hope that helps!

Oh, and I did automatic white balance, though I think that's the big thing that could be improved upon with this pic. The white balance is definitely not right on.

Thanks Amy. I appreciate your tips a lot! :* I don't use back button focus, but changing the focus to continuous (Nikon speak for AI Servo) will definitely help with focusing. Now that I think of it, using back button would definitely be preferable in this sort of instance. Maybe I'll give it a shot, though I know my fingers are going to get tied in knots doing it ;)

OMgosh!! Now wonder you love this photo!!! If you don't mind--and you could do this on your blog instead of in the comments or whatever--but would you explain back button focusing??? I don't know anything about it! If you don't have the time-no biggie, I will just research it! Thanks so much for sharing this much info. It really helps!! I have struggled with indoor sports. They are so hard!

Amy-just wanted to tell you that I have found quite a bit of info on back button focusing... just in case you don't want to mess with it! Thank you again for mentioning it--this feels like a lightbulb moment!! Maybe this will do the trick for me. Can't wait to try it!!! :)

Kidding, kidding, that's a great shot.
