Six years ago tomorrow...

Six years ago tomorrow is the day I became aware that I am a mom. Six years ago tomorrow is the day I found out I was pregnant with my sweet Emma. Man, I remember it like it was yesterday, too. It was like the first day of the rest of my life. Because, you know, I hardly remember life before children. I do, but... well... I don't know. It's hard to explain. From day one, my life began changing for her, to better accommodate her. Nothing's changed. Well, aside from the fact that then she was a little peanut in my tummy, but now she's a honkin' huge (relatively speaking) 5 year old sitting beside me playing on the Barbie website. (On December 6, 2001, that is definitely one thing I did NOT think my life would entail... a Barbie website!?! Seriously?)

I've been thinking about this today because I photographed a newborn today. My first "official" newborn. As in, not my family. And, man, he was so, so cute & tiny. TINY! It's funny that, as I look at Emma right now, it appears that sweet little baby "L" is about the same size as my kid's head. Haha! And, at birth, my Emma was a bit smaller than baby "L." Crazy business, I tell ya!

Anyway, he was SOOOO good! It was SUCH a pleasant experience for my first newborn! He was awake, alert & squirmy for the first bit, but then he drifted off to sleep for the last half. Perfect, right!?! Plus, he was naked pretty much the whole time, and the worst he did was pee! Way to cooperate, baby "L!" I was expecting WAY worse, and I'm sure you know just what I mean. :-)

So, here are a few pictures working with the available light in their home:

Color or black & white?

I played with texture on this next one. Do you have a clear favorite of the two, or are they too similar?

Isn't he the most precious little thing? Man, for just a split, SPLIT second... That split second vanished pretty quick, though. :-)

Good job! He is sweet. Photograph enough of these newborns and maybe you'll give me another grandchild yet :-)

I think I like the color and the first one of the textured ones. And I love the one with the paisley background.

Hey there Amy...great job! Lucky family to have you be the one to do their photographs. Thought I would let you know my faves...color over b&w and second textured one. My very fave is the one with the paisley background(your mom has good taste)...

It's funny because December 17th marks 6 years that I found out I was going to be a mom...what a coinky dink. How things have changed! The only thing I want from back then is my waistline! Ha!...oh, and sleeping in...lol

These are precious!!! (of course)
On the textured ones, I like the second because they first looks like he's got some red spots on his face. The second seems a bit softer too.

Hi, I love your blog, you do such fantastic work!! I did have a question for you if you don't mind? You said this was your first newborn, so did you bring "props" like the brown & blue back ground or whatever that was & did you do it on location or do you have a studio? I am really struggling with "indoor" photos. Not knowing exactly what shutter to use to get enough light but not to be blury. And going to other peoples house you never know what they have or what kind of natural light they will have. Just wondering if you had any tips. Thanks

Hi Amy I am doing a serious post this time:) Don't worry I will go back to my regular self next time.
The pics are great as usual. I especially like the one of the child in the hands. I just wanted everyone who checks your blog to know how proud we are of you. Not so much because you are a great photographer but because you are willing to share your gifts, talents and life with others that they may enjoy and learn from them as you have.
We love you:)

Oh sorry!

I'd do both color AND black and white for the dish. They are both wonderful. And for the textures, I like the first one best.

Hi Dawn,
My name is Amy Little and I came across your blog by accident and want you to know that I LOVE your pictures. I know this is quite forward, but I am a beginning photographer and was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing some tips about the lenses and lighting equipment that you used. I have a Canon rebel xti and I'm just trying to find lenses that take pictures like the ones you take. I hope that you don't mind me asking, I just don't know where to begin and I love photography. I'd love it if you could help me out a little, but if you are too busy, then thanks for your time anyway.
my email is chickenlittle678@yahoo.com
Sincerely,
Amy Little
