One of the reasons that I love our church...
So, I've just got to say that I LOVE my church. It's so, SO awesome. Curt & I searched for a good church for years. Seriously... YEARS! We've lived here 7+ years, and we've only just found the church for us about a year ago.
Not only does it fit what we were looking for in a church, but it also fits so much more than we thought we were looking for, you know? Ours is a church that serves it's community. Man, we're an active, out there church. I LOVE that. I love that we go out and serve the community. I love that we are constantly, as a church, showing the community the love of Christ. We don't go out and blindly try to recruit or push our beliefs on anyone else. We just go out and fix their roofs. Or, build wheelchair ramps. Or whatever. We show them the love of Christ. That's just so cool, if you ask me. :)
Anyway, today was one of those days. Rather than a regular church service, we came in our work clothes. We broke into groups, and we went out and worked for the community. We worked from 9 - noon. And, many of us worked longer than that.
Emma & I were assigned to run-down soccer fields. They needed mowing, holes filled, goal posts painted, bleachers painted... They needed the roofs of the small buildings (bathrooms, concessions, maybe?) re-roofed. There was a team of us, and we knocked it out. I was so excited to be able to take Emma with me. Curt had to work, so he couldn't go, unfortunately. And, Maya stayed back at the church with the other preschool age kiddos.
I told Emma on our way that she could play some, but she needed to work some, too. She surprised me, though, when she told me that she thought she'd just work the whole time. :) She was such a great servant. She had a fantastic attitude the whole time, and she absolutely DID work the whole time, too! It was so great to be able to serve side by side with my 5 year old daughter. I'm thankful for moments like this... teachable moments, you know?

Jesus said the greatest commandment was to love the Lord our God and to love our neighbor as ourself. Your church is doing that - you and Emma were doing that today. I'm proud of you.
Are you worried someone might steal those photos? They are great shots but could probably do without the watermark.
That deserves a large, all-caps "AWWWWW"
I am thankful you have a place to call yours that is living out the great commands.
Peace from PA
Anonymous - Thanks so much for your input, but this is my blog. I'll watermark whatever I want. As a matter of fact, I HAVE had photos of my children stolen and used on websites without my approval. In addition, you'll notice that they are stamped with my husband's name. I give credit where credit is due, and this is one easy, quick way to do it.
Hi Amy, first of all I'm right there with you on the need to watermark!
Second, I have a random non-photography related request. I am in the midst of teaching a Sunday School class at my church on the Emerging Culture (those of us born after 1964) and the needs and gifts of our generation. We'll be talking next week about what those in our generation are looking for in a congregation and I would LOVE your permission to use some of your words from this post. I think you summed up beautifully what I was trying to get across to my class today (which consisted of most the 60 and up crowd!) - that our generation longs to share the love of Christ through action. I'm so glad you have a place to do that!
Thanks Amy!
Every time you watermark your pictures, the terrorists win.

So, what's with the opinions on the watermark?
I love the photos. I agree with David about them needing a capitalized AWWWWW.
I'm glad it was a good day.
This is the kind of church I would like to find. I would love to do something like that "through the church" with my girls.
Love the picture! I check your blog almost daily to see if you've added any photos. I love your work.
Have a great day!

I would love to be able to find a church like that. What a truly amazing thing for you and your daughter to participate in together. THANKS for sharing it with us.
I love that you and Emma were able to get out and serve together. That is so neat that you did that with your church. That is also so important to me... to be a part of a church that serves. It sounds like you are really improving your community. That is awesome.
I love the pics of you and Emma. In those shirts with the paint on her legs. That is great.
I had fun at lunch Amy. I love the pics. I appreciate you. Hopefully I'll see you soon.
I'm glad you had the opportunity to do this together, and a church that believes this is important. Sounds like a great church!
I found your blog recently while just browsing. You are very talented. I am looking into purchasing a SLR and was wondering if you wouldn't mind giving me some tips. What kind of SLR do you use?
Like your new profile picture. Curt did a good job.
